When I started working as a professional declutterer and organiser, I quickly realised that helping people let go of their belongings was only part of the job. The other part is making sure those belongings find a good home rather than ending up in landfill.

I've always cared deeply about sustainability. Long before I set up The Happy Nest, I was the person in my family who researched the best way to recycle an old toaster, or who spent an afternoon finding a charity that would actually collect a worn sofa. That instinct hasn't changed, it's just become central to how I work.

Every decluttering session I run follows what I think of as a responsible hierarchy. First, we ask: can this be kept and used? If not, can it be repaired? If not, can it be donated, sold, or passed on to someone who needs it? Only when all of those options are exhausted do we consider recycling, and landfill is always the very last resort.

In practice, this means I arrive at sessions with a good knowledge of local and national options. I know which charities collect furniture and which only accept drop-offs. I know which textile banks are genuinely recycled and which aren't. I know about community groups, Freecycle, Facebook Marketplace, and specialist resellers for everything from vintage clothing to old tools.

It also means I'm honest with clients. Not everything can be rehomed beautifully. Some things are simply worn out, broken beyond repair, or so specific that no one else will want them. In those cases, I help clients let go without guilt, because holding onto something out of environmental anxiety isn't the answer either. The goal is a clear, calm home and a clear conscience.

One of the things I love most about this work is seeing the relief on people's faces when they realise that decluttering responsibly is possible. They don't have to choose between a tidy home and their values. With a little knowledge and planning, you really can have both.
